BARNSLEY could be close to seeing the last of its old generation Gatso speed cameras disappear as road safety bosses review whether alternatives could provide a better solution.

The Gatso cameras were the first static speed cameras when they were introduced in Barnsley two decades ago but they use technology which is now well out of date, relying on old-style ‘wet’ film which has to be developed rather than digital images which modern speed cameras produce.

A review has already been carried out of the sites where cameras are deemed necessary for road safety and modern cameras have been installed at those locations, including Park Road near Locke Park, Harborough Hill Road and Park Road in Worsbrough Dale.

But further work is now being carried out around the remaining Gatsos, which were not identified as priority sites for new cameras at the time.

Some have now been ‘bagged’, fitted with high visibility hoods to ensure motorists are aware they are out of commission.
