HUNNINGLEY Primary School is celebrating sporting success as it received the School Games ‘Silver Mark’ in its first year of taking part in the scheme.

The School Games Mark scheme is government-led, and rewards schools for developing competition and physical education both within the school itself and in the community.

Participating schools must have opportunities for all children to take part in sport, and be able to measure their performance.

Chris Wood, primary sports co-ordinator, said: “It's the first year I've been working within Hunningley and we've made so much progress with sport in the school in such a short time.

“We also liaise closely with the PE department at Barnsley Academy to run competitions, sports days and other activities and also have a wide range of plans for next year to keep improving sports provision at Hunningley, giving children more and more opportunities, both competitive and non-competitive.”

Hunningley headteacher Caroline Dean said: “Sport is an incredibly important part of the curriculum here at Hunningley and we’re so pleased to have gained official recognition for our work in this area.”
