NINE sport projects run in Barnsley over the summer helped save thousands in the costs associated with substance misuse and antisocial behaviour, according to the police and crime commissioner who funded the projects.

Commissioner Dr Alan Billings said the £20,000 spent on 50 sporting projects across South Yorkshire - nine in Barnsley - generated a ‘social return’ on investment of almost £400,000.

Dr Billings said: “The results of this pilot initiative are very pleasing. With funding extremely tight for organisations, the return on investment and the number of participants involved is remarkable.”
