NHS and social care staff in Barnsley have been put forward to have freedom of the borough.

Independent Coun Jake Lodge, who represents the Worsbrough ward, has nominated frontline workers to honour their commitment during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak and the bid is now with Barnsley Council.

Coun Lodge said: “The pandemic has had a huge impact on residents across the borough, with families and individuals being impacted in various ways.

“There are still people fighting this disease and they are being supported by the tremendous efforts of the NHS and social care staff.

“It is only right that we bestow on them the highest honour we can as a council and grant them the freedom of the borough.

“Without their determination and sacrifice, we would not have got through this crisis and it is right that we should remember their efforts in this way.’’
