STAFF at Silkstone Primary want to hear from former staff and pupils to help mark the school’s 50th anniversary.

The school, on High Street became Silkstone Primary in 1968, but it had previously been Silkstone Secondary Modern.

Staff and pupils have been looking at old school diaries and collecting old photos, but want to hear from anyone who may have any memories or stories.

Year five teacher Alex Simon said: “We just want to mark the anniversary. It’s 50 years and the school does a lot of history work - we’ve got a group working on the commemoration of the Huskar Pit Disaster which was 180 years ago this summer.”

Alex has also been in touch with former teacher John Stringer, who’s in his late 80s, who revisited his old classroom.

Alex said information in the school dairies revealed that the headteacher kept a log of what had happened every day, and the school had turkey verandas, allotments and garden patches.

An open day will be held on June 26 where there will be exhibitions.

Alex welcomes all memories, stories and photos but particularly wants to hear from anyone who remembers it as the secondary modern.
