AN agreement is in place for major coffee chain Starbucks to occupy a proposed drive-through unit near Barnsley town centre.

Peel Property Investments is seeking planning permission to finalise the plan at the Peel Centre site off Harborough Hill Road, where there are currently 13 units.

The application follows a decision by McDonald’s to build a restaurant at New Street, a short distance from the new centre, alongside its existing outlet at nearby Old Mill Lane.

A planning statement said: “Peel has agreed terms with Starbucks to occupy the unit and the proposals will be integrated within the core of the existing retail park.

“There is a limited hot food and drink offering for shoppers on site. Currently there is only Pizza Hut which provides such services and so the proposed development would complement the retail park’s offering.

“Owing to the nature of the development, it is anticipated that there will be minimal new trips generated as a result as customers would not be making a single journey trip to buy a coffee. The majority of customers will either be existing Peel Centre users or call in as they drive past.”

Plans show 50 current car parking spaces would be lost to facilitate the drive-through’s build, but it’s not seen as something which will have a long-term detrimental impact.

The new unit, if given the green light, will be connected to the rest of the retail park via an existing raised walkway and a new zebra crossing.

Earlier this year, the Chronicle revealed Starbucks is planning to open a drive-through at the new Gateway 36 site at Birdwell.
