THE oldest steam engine in the world still at its original location rumbles back to life in Elsecar tonight - complete with fireworks and an honour guard of steaming locomotives.
The Newcomen beam engine dates back to 1795 and pumped water from local collieries until 1923. It has not worked since the 1950s but tonight it sparks back into life following a £500,000 restoration project.
The evening includes the village's Christmas lights switch-on and late-night opening for the shops, studios, and cafes of Elsecar Heritage Centre.
