Jason Scotland and Chris Dagnall scored their fifth league goals of the season and Luke Steele saved a late penalty as Barnsley beat Brighton 2-1 at Oakwell on Tuesday night to move up from bottom of the Championship and out of the relegation zone.

Barnsley took the lead after 15 minutes when Scotland scored on his first start for Barnsley. The striker capitalised on a misjudgement by Adam El Abd to finish calmly from 10 yards.

Brighton levelled on the hour when Leonardo Ulloa back headed the ball in from an Inigo Calderon cross. The Reds responded two minutes later when El Abd pulled back substitute Chris Dagnall in the area and the striker beat Tomasz Kuszczak with a good penalty into the bottom left corner.

Ulloa was given the perfect chance to level again on 84 minutes when David Perkins fouled Calderon in the box and a penalty was given. But Steele dived low to his right to save the spot-kick and earn three precious points.
