Luke Steele saved three penalties and missed one as Barnsley won 5-4 in an 18-shot shoot-out against Scunthorpe United after 120 goalless minutes at Oakwell in the first round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.

 

Terry Hawkridge put the first spot-kick wide before Chris Dagnall blazed over. Michael Collins netted then Jason Scotland shanked well wide to leave it 1-0 to the Iron. Steele then saved from Matt Sparrow before Tomasz Cywka netted for 1-1.

 

Chris Iwelumo, Stephen Dawson, Matt Godden and David Perkins all netted for 3-3 after five each. Steele then saved from Andy Welsh but fired over with his own effort.

 

Scunthorpe stopper Sam Slocombe also missed the target then Jim O'Brien hit the bar. David Mirfin and Scott Golbourne netted to make it 4-4 before Steele made a fine save from Niall Canavan then Chris O'Grady won it.

 

O'Grady missed several fine chances as Barnsley started slowly then dominated from 70 minutes onwards. Steele had to make fine saves from Sparrow and Godden as League Two Scunthorpe battled all the way before being beaten.
