Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel is delighted to be in the third round of the FA Cup after what he thought was a deserved win at Southend United.

The Reds won 4-2 in the second round clash at Roots Hall thanks to a Cauley Woodrow double and strikes by Kieffer Moore and Mike Bahre. Head coach Stendel said: “It was a good performance. We controlled most of the game. I think the better team won. I am glad that we don’t have a replay because we have played a lot of games in the last weeks and we have a lot more to play in the next weeks.”

Southend thought they had levelled at 3-3 when Michael Turner found the net in the 90th minute but the goal was ruled out, apparently for offside while Barnsley also felt Turner handled before scoring. Stendel said: “I nearly had a heart attack. But I am glad that the referee did not give it for offside or handball.”

The draw for the third round will contain Premier League and Championship sides and it takes place on Monday evening. Stendel is hoping to draw Liverpool for his assistant Andreas Winkler. He said: “Andy’s birthday is today and his wish is to play Liverpool so I wish that for him.”

Stendel played a fairly strong team, making only three changes. He said: “I want to win every game. This was an important game for us, a Saturday game. I was happy with the three changes and the performances of Mike Bahre, George Moncur and Jacob Brown who came into the team.”

Woodrow’s brace took him to five in his last five games while Moore has six in six and 13 in total. Stendel said; “It is good that Cauley scored. We have two players who are scoring at the moment in Kieffer and Cauley and it is not easy for the opposition teams.”

Woodrow added: “We’re delighted to be through to the next round. It was disappointing to go in 1-1 after Southend hadn’t had a shot on target. But we knew, if we carried on with our style of football, we would get the result and we did.”

Woodrow’s first goal came after home ‘keeper Mark Oxley punched a corner into the striker’s face. He said: “It was definitely my goal. He punched it straight into my teeth. I was pleased and I’ll claim it. I don’t think I have scored one like it but I have still got all my teeth which is the main thing.”

Woodrow, on loan from Fulham with a permanent deal set to go through in January, is hoping for a Premier League club in the next round. He said: “I have played in the FA Cup a few times and it is magical. We want to play against the big boys in the next round and beat them. I would like to play Fulham but I am not sure I can play against them.”
