Daniel Stendel has congratulated Luton Town for winning League One and praised his Barnsley players for joining them in the Championship.

The Reds lost 2-1 at Bristol Rovers and finished three points behind champions Luton Town who had led on goal difference at the start of the day then beat Oxford United.

Barnsley took the lead through Kieffer Moore but Liam Lindsay was sent off late in the first half and the hosts struck twice late on.

Head coach Stendel said: “I thought before that it wouldn’t be easy to play our best game after Tuesday (when promotion was confirmed). We started well and took the lead but, after the red card, it was very difficult. Some decisions were not in our direction but it doesn’t matter.

“We’re promoted which was our big goal. Congratulations to Luton for winning the title. They deserved it in the end. We will see them next season in the Championship.

“After a long and hard season, we have the success we deserved. I am very proud of my team, my club and all the supporters that we achieved our goal. It’s a great feeling.”

Stendel and his players celebrated after the game with the 1,145 Barnsley fans. He said: "It was special and the top moment of the season for us. We have big support in every game. It was a long way to come today, especially as we were promoted before. It is a big part of our club that we have so many good supporters.”
