Daniel Stendel says today’s win over Bristol Rovers was ‘very important’ after his side ‘lost confidence’ following the defeats at Charlton and Shrewsbury in the previous week.

The Reds won 1-0 thanks to an early long-range strike by Alex Mowatt which moved them to fourth. Head coach Daniel Stendel said: “It was a very important win. We lost our self-confidence and belief so quickly after losing two games.

“It was not easy to win and it was not the best performance but in the end we were the right winner. We had more chances than them. We won at home, kept a clean sheet and it's good that we stopped the bad run. The table is very close so we need points.”

Mowatt scored early but Barnsley then seemed to lose their way with the visitors missing chances to level before the break. Stendel said: “We started very well and went 1-0 up but, after 15 minutes, we stayed too deep and were too passive which was a consequence from the last two games because our confidence was not so high. But we won and I hope the performance and result give the players more confidence.

“Sometimes it is OK when you win 1-0 and it not a festival of a game. The players showed today that they can change their performance, which is important for me and for the players.”

Midfielder Cameron McGeehan, who came into the team for the injured Kenny Dougall, was also delighted with the result. He said: “It was a good response. We had two poor games after the standards we set ourselves.

“It was the type of performance we wanted to have because we all stuck together and stuck to our task. It was a tough game, not the prettiest game, but we got three points to get the ball rolling again. We want to get promoted so we need to be winning games and not going on bad runs. We just need to keep the wins coming.

“League One is tough, teams don’t come to play every week. There will be tough, physical games sometimes. We found that at Shrewsbury and didn’t match it but we did today.”
