German Daniel Stendel has agreed to become the new Barnsley head coach on a two-year contract.

Stendel, 44, was officially appointed on Wednesday afternoon after finalising the details of the deal on Tuesday at Oakwell.

It will be the German's second managerial role in senior football after previously being in charge of Hannover, a club he also represented as a player, between 2016 and 2017.

He took over the already relegated side and was leading their charge back to the Bundesliga the following season before being sacked.

Stendel became the bookmakers' favourite over the weekend and rose above other candidates including former Red Grant McCann.

Stendel's assistants are due to be revealed later this week.

More on Stendel's appointment in Friday's Chronicle.
