STEROID abuse among young men is a major concern, according to a council report recommending a new £1.2m substance misuse service for young people in Barnsley.

On Wednesday the ruling cabinet member rubber-stamped the commissioning of the misuse service, which will be provided for three years from October by Lifeline Projects Limited.

A report seen by councillors said the number of young people going for drug treatment services in the borough has remained consistent at about 200 per year.

It shows there have been some specific trends in substance misuse locally, particularly with the increase in the use of both mephedrone (MCAT) and synthetic drugs - which were known as ‘legal highs’.
