THE Stocksbridge bypass has reopened again after several days of disruption due to flooding.

Heavy rain forced the closure of the A616 between the A628 at the Flouch roundabout and the A6102 at Deepcar last Thursday, and while it did re-open over the weekend, further heavy rain forced it to close again earlier today.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: “The A616 at Stocksbridge was closed due to severe flooding which at its worst was around 3.5 feet deep on Thursday.

“A high volume pump was used to reduce the impact of the water and we were able to open one side of the carriageway on Friday evening with temporary traffic lights. These were removed overnight on Saturday and the A616 was completely reopened by 7.15am on Sunday.

“Unfortunately due to severe downpours over the weekend we had to close the A616 again today.

“One side of the carriageway did reopen just after 10am this morning and the temporary traffic lights are now being removed to open the road completely this afternoon. We will continue to monitor the situation while extensive surveys are carried out at this location and any actions carried out as soon as possible.”
