STREET lighting won't be turned off or dimmed to save money in Barnsley, a senior councillor has vowed.

The Labour Party published a national survey this week revealing up to a quarter of the country's street lights are dimmed or switched off as council's grapple with spending cuts.

But Coun Roy Miller said it wont be happening in Barnsley.

"We don't do it, and I wouldn't agree to it. It's extremely dangerous," said the councillor, whose cabinet responsibilities include highways and street lighting.

"We know there have been other areas of the country that have tried it there have been accidents.

"Instead we're replacing our lanterns with new, LED lighting which will save us £500,000 in our electricity bills."
