A CONVICTED murderer who turned his life around with art has donated this striking image to the National Union of Mineworkers.

Darren Green, 46, spent 14 years in prison after a fight with a friend got out of hand.

It has cost him his marriage and his relationship with his daughter who he has not seen since she was 18-months-old.

He was given a life sentence, and although he has since been released, will be on parole until the day he dies.

He was jailed in 1997. His guilty plea to manslaughter was rejected and he was convicted of murder by a jury.

Darren, who lives in the town centre, discovered art in prison and after picking up a book in the library, he started to copy the work of Vincent Van Gogh and other artists before painting his own creations.

This composite photograph shows Barnsley pit head under dramatic skies and surrounded by lightning. To one side is the image of a miner.

Darren said: “My dad was a miner for 24 years and when I got out I did a couple of paintings and donated them to the miners welfare.

“This is not a bad picture. I’ll never be rich with the work that I do but I felt this what the right thing to do. I just hope the NUM like and and enjoy it.”
