POOR ticket sales have forced organisers to cancel a strongman event set to take place in Barnsley this weekend.

The Yorkshire Highland Games event, organised by Man Beast Strongman, was due to be held on Sunday at the Dorothy Hyman stadium in Cudworth.

Andrew Picken, from Man Beast Strongman, was forced to scrap the show due to low ticket sales. It will now take place in Matlock on August 27, combining with the Peak District Highland Games.

He said: "It didn't have the uptake this year. We didn't have enough sales.

"We had eight online ticket sales. We've reimbursed them." Andrew told the Chronicle that a car dead lift event held at the Mayor's Parade did well and he hasn't ruled out holding the games again in Barnsley but says it would need to be better promoted if it is to pull in the crowds needed to make it a goer.

"I've not discounted it for next year but I think we need more build up," he said.
