UNIVERSITY Campus Barnsley students successfully launched a living history event to remember the end of the First World War.
The Home from the Front event at Elsecar Heritage Centre provided an authentic recreation of the demobilisation of troops by using a steam locomotive built in 1904 in Leeds, and a Great North of Scotland six-wheel railway carriage.
Acting for touring theatre students played the role of troops, nurses and others at the front line who made the journey back to their homes around the UK between 1918 and 1920.
Oliver Edwards, a travel and tourism student and co-organiser of the event, said: “The event has helped strengthen relationships between students and the wider community. We are grateful to all our partners for their help in making this event a success.
“It has definitely provided me with experience I can use in the future.”
Neil Johnson, head of service industry at UCB, added: “The students’ behaviour and attitude was exemplary. They really got into their roles and gave the public a realistic experience of life during World War One. Each student played their part in helping achieve the aims and objectives of the event, making it a huge success.”
