Substitute Cauley Woodrow continued his good form as Barnsley drew 1-1 at home to Doncaster Rovers in a South Yorkshire derby at Oakwell.

The visitors took the lead early in the second half but were only ahead for seven minutes as Woodrow, who had come off the bench seconds earlier, scored his third goal in as many games.

It was an entertaining derby in which the visitors created the better chances including several late on from which they could easily have won it.

The Reds’ run of six successive victories came to an end but they are still unbeaten in their last 16 home matches since March. They stay third in League One, six points behind leaders Portsmouth and two behind second-placed Sunderland who they are due to visit on Sunderland.

Daniel Stendel sprang some surprises pre-match as he made four changes to the side that won 2-0 at Accrington Stanley a week earlier. Cauley Woodrow, despite scoring two in two, was replaced by Mike Bahre who played behind Kieffer Moore with the formation changing from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1.

Ryan Hedges replaced Mamadou Thiam on the left wing while Dani Pinillos played behind him at left-back in place of the suspended Dani Pinillos. Adam Davies returned from international duty in place of Jordan Smith who stepped in for him on a week-long emergency loan from Nottingham Forest at Accrington.

The visitors began on top with Ethan Pinnock, who was outstanding throughout, having to produce an excellent last-ditch tackle to deny Ali Crawford from close range. Alfie May fired across the face of goal and James Coppinger rattled the crossbar from 25 yards.

Barnsley saw 25-yard shots go well off target from Hedges and Moore who then headed wide when well-placed to meet a Dimitri Cavare cross midway through the first half. Moore then shot straight at goalkeeper Ian Lawlor from 15 yards when he could have passed to the unmarked Brad Potts on his right.

Marquis shot straight at Davies from 25 yards after one of several occasions when Cameron McGeehan gave the ball away in his half. At the other end, Niall Mason made a superb late challenge to deny Moore who almost latched onto a good Bahre throughball. Moore then blazed over from the right of the box after a hectic scramble which saw McGeehan and Potts both have shots blocked.

Barnsley had finished an entertaining but goalless first half on top, but it was the visitors who scored ten minutes after the break. Cavare cut out a through ball then dallied on the ball on the left side of his box and lost it then the resulting cross was headed home by Herbie Kane.  Stendel responded immediately by bringing on Woodrow and George Moncur for McGeehan and Pinillos, with the formation changing to 4-4-2 and Hedges going to left-back.

Less than two minutes later, it was 1-1 as Potts headed a cleared free-kick back into the box and, after touches by Moore and Cavare, Woodrow was perfectly positioned to finish from six yards out.

Barnsley had good spell after the equaliser but could not create any real chances to take the lead. The visitors then had the better of the last 20 minutes and May could have put them back in front but blazed a superb chance over the bar in the box after Bahre lost the ball deep in his half.

Donny had another great chance in injury-time when, after Cavare lost the ball yet again deep in his half, Kane’s cross from the left was met by Coppinger but Davies made a sensational save diving to his left. That was the final action of an entertaining match.
