Barnsley lost 4-2 at fellow high-flyers Sunderland who went 3-0 up early on in a classic match.

The referee awarded a controversial penalty against Ethan Pinnock on 18 minutes which was scored followed by two more goals in the next 14 minutes. But the Reds launched an impressive fightback with Kieffer Moore pulling one goal back before the break then heading in a second after the interval.

Barnsley, who showed great character and dominated large parts of the game, had chances to level but Sunderland eventually scored a fourth on the counter-attack and are now five points clear of their visitors who have slipped down to fifth in the table.

Daniel Stendel made three changes from the side that drew 1-1 at home to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday. Zeki Fryers returned from suspension to replace Dani Pinillos at left-back while, in front of him, injured winger Ryan Hedges’ place was taken by Mamadou Thiam. Striker Cauley Woodrow came in for Mike Bahre as the Reds returned to 4-4-2 after playing 4-2-3-1 at the weekend.

Barnsley had the first real chance when Kieffer Moore nodded over a tough opportunity from a Fryers cross, but Sunderland missed much better headed opportunity with Josh Maja off target from six yards out.

Moore then held the ball up brilliantly before passing the ball out to right-back Dimitri Cavare who advanced into the box and his shot was straight at the goalkeeper whose kick immediately after led to the opener. Cavare misjudged the long ball and Sunderland advanced into the box with Aiden McGeady who was tackled by Ethan Pinnock.  Referee Andy Madley awarded a hotly-disputed penalty as Pinnock appeared to have won the ball. McGeedy slotted the spot-kick then it was 2-0 within a minute as the Reds seemed rattled and out of position as they allowed Maja to pick up the ball deep in their half and advance into space before picking his spot to find the bottom left corner.

Maja then missed another excellent chance as he headed a cross off target from close range for the second time. Woodrow almost pulled one back but saw his header cleared off the line by Jack Baldwin after Cavare flicked on a corner.

It was 3-0 on 32 minutes when Sunderland broke down the left and pulled the ball back to Lynden Gooch who curled brilliantly into the top left corner from the edge of the box.

Barnsley made it 3-1 before the break when the impressive Fryers broke down the left and crossed low to Moore who initially shot too close to the goalkeeper but was gifted a second chance by a poor defensive clearance and tucked it away.

It was almost 3-2 before the break when Moore headed down a long ball to Woodrow who chested and turned brilliantly but fired against the post from seven yards out.

The Reds finished the first half very strongly and began in the same way after the interval, eventually making it 3-2 when Moore headed in the latest in a succession of Alex Mowatt corners from the right wing.

Sunderland nearly went 4-2 up when substitute Luke O’Nien headed narrowly wide but the Reds also came close when Moore headed to the goalkeeper just away from Woodrow who also nodded over from a cross by substitute Jacob Brown.

Barnsley were on top for the majority of the second half but struggled to create clear chances. Sunderland were a danger on the break as Adam Davies made a brilliant one-on-one tackle to deny Maguire who went clean through.  The hosts eventually made it 4-2 on the counter-attack as they had extra men on the overlap and worked it to O’Nien who tapped into the empty net.

Sunderland (4-5-1): McLaughin; Matthews, Flanagan, Baldwin, James; Power,  Gooch (Oviedo 90); Honeyman, Maguire (Sinclair 84), McGeady; Maja (O’Nien 59). Unused: Patterson, Ozturk, Hackett, Mumba.  Goals: McGeady 19 (pen), Maja 20, Gooch 32, O’Nien 83.  Barnsley (4-4-2): Davies; Cavare, Pinnock, Lindsay, Fryers (Brown 59); Potts (Moncur 77), Mowatt, McGeehan, Thiam; Moore, Woodrow (Adeboyejo 85). • 19:09pm

Sunderland, following two successive relegations from the Premier League then Championship, have lost just once in the league this season – at the other relegated side Burton Albion in September. They are unbeaten in 13 matches.
  • 19:09pm

They were on a run of eight successive victories in all competitions but they had to salvage a 1-1 draw at home to 15th-placed Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday. They then drew 2-2 at Walsall on Saturday having had Max Power sent off on 23 minutes then gone 2-0 down.
  • 19:12pm

Sunderland had the best defensive record in the league before the Walsall match but now they have conceded 16 which is one more than both Barnsley and leaders Portsmouth.
  • 19:24pm
Winkler said: “We’re looking forward to this match. It’s a massive stadium with a lot of supporters. We are happy to have this match because that what football is about. I don’t know if it is our toughest match but it is our biggest chance because everybody knows that, if we win, we will be second.
  • 19:25pm

He added: “Sunderland have lots of experience and quality. They have a lot of composure and they know how to beat a team. They don’t take many risks because they know they have the quality.  They have massive resources but it’s not up to me to talk about that. They are a very good side. ”
  • 19:28pm

Sunderland’s manager Jack Ross was appointed in the summer after being linked to Barnsley earlier in the year.

The two clubs have met 27 times, with Barnsley losing 15 and winning ten including both meetings last season. There have been just two draws between the clubs, both in the first three games.

  • 19:36pm

Ethan Pinnock then secured a 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light on New Year’s Day, but both sides would be relegated four months later.
  • 19:38pm

Pinnock said yesterday: “I forgot that I scored the winner there last season. It was a good moment for me. It’s one of the highlights of my career because I had come a long way from non-league football to score the winner at the Stadium of Light. If you had told me I would do that a few years ago I would have said: ‘what are you talking about?’
  • 19:42pm

He added: “It’s a massive game. They were relegated with us last season. All the boys are really up for it and looking forward to it. We’re hoping we can leave there with the three points.”

The last Sunderland player to score against Barnsley was David Connolly, who netted in the 2-0 success at Oakwell in March 2007.
  • 19:43pm

Barnsley have won two of their three games at the Stadium of Light. Their first visit was a 3-2 success in November 1998. Ashley Ward put them ahead then skied a penalty before Bruce Dyer made it 2-0. Martin Scott, who would later coach at Oakwell, and Niall Quinn made it 2-2 but Darren Barnard’s penalty won it.

  • 19:49pm

3 Not much going on so far. Cavare misjudges a long ball but recovers to shepherd the ball away. The Reds have had a couple of positive attacks
  • 19:51pm

6 Cauley Woodrow takes a whack competing for an aerial ball but he's up and can carry on
  • 19:54pm

The pitch is very wet after a couple of hours of heavy rain before kick-off. Neither side have got their passing game going yet and it's a bit scrappy
  • 19:56pm

10 First real chance. Fryers runs onto McGeehan's pass in lots of space on the left. His cross is just too high for Moore who cannot direct it goalwards
  • 19:59pm

13 Huge chance. Reece James cross from the left is headed wide by Josh Maja six yards out with the goal gaping
  • 19:59pm

That was at the end of a very long passing move by the hosts during which Barnsley really struggled to get near them.
  • 20:02pm

16 McGeehan is gifted the ball 30 yards out by a bad defensive pass from Jon Flanagan. He exchanges passes with Moore then shoots wide from 20 yards
  • 20:03pm

18 Penalty against Ethan Pinnock. That looked very harsh. It was a foul on McGeedy

  • 20:21pm

Cavare made his debut here last season and did well, but he's struggled so far and has allowed the hosts into good opportunities for the first and third goal

So goals in the 18th, 19th and 32nd minute have left the Reds will a mountain to climb here in the North East
