THERE are fears for safety after an independent supermarket opened in Hoyland, causing parking chaos outside.
The new Family Shopper store at the old Kino site on West Street only opened a week ago, but neighbours are already concerned about the parking.
Brooke Street resident Andrew Goldthorpe says cars parking outside the shop at the junction of West Street and Brooke Street are causing a hazard to motorists and pedestrians.
Mr Goldthorpe, who works in a fruit shop, has written to Barnsley Council asking for action about the risk which he describes as "a recipe for disaster."
He said: "The potential for disaster is obvious for anyone to see.
"The parking was bad enough before the supermarket opened but now it is horrendous. Opposite there is another bus stop. Just to add to the mix you then have all the children coming and going from Kirk Balk school.
"I am totally lost for words that no one has picked up on this potential life threatening hazard, there needs to be double yellow lines on both sides of the road on West Street in both directions for at least 500 yards."
A Barnsley Council spokesman said planning permission was approved for the supermarket, on the site of a former snooker hall, at West Street, Hoyland with approval subject to several parking conditions.
He said: "One of these was provision of parking to the rear of the premises prior to the shop coming into use.
"However, recent concerns over parking have alerted the council's planning department that the use has commenced without the relevant conditions - including the provision of parking - having been addressed. The situation is being investigated."
The Chronicle contacted the supermarket but no-one provided a comment.
In its original proposals to the council, the Family Shopper supermarket showed how "peripheral areas" of its site could allow a one-way access system to be established for vehicles, alongside "a few chevron parking spaces at the rear."
