A LONG-AWAITED new supermarket in Royston is finally gaining momentum - a year after getting planning permission.

Aldi, whose plan to build a store on the 2.5-acre Station Road site was given the green light by Barnsley Council in June last year, has now revealed a detailed design will be unveiled in the 'near future'.

The application received overwhelming support in the public consultation, with 90 per cent of respondents in favour of the proposals.

An Aldi spokesman said: "The Station Road store is going through ongoing developments. Further ground investigations are currently being taken out due to the levels on the site, but we will be forming a detailed design in the near future. It will create up to 50 full and part-time jobs, while it is also anticipated that up to 200 opportunities will be created during its construction phase."
