CLOTHING, blankets and stationery to help young people in Uganda have been collected by people in Barnsley.

Last year, a number of supporters of the Africa with Love charity managed to collect more than 400 toothbrushes which were then shipped to Uganda to give to under privileged families.

Carrying on from that work, this year, pens and pencils were collected to donate to the local school in Uganda for the children to use.

So far, members of staff from Barnsley Council, Berneslai Homes and supporters of the Africa with Love charity have managed to collect over 300 pens and pencils which are already boxed up and ready to be shipped off to Africa.

Carol Higgins, who is one of the supporters for the group also held a coffee morning to raise money to help the school.

Carol, 67, of Downs Crescent, Gawber, said: “The coffee morning went really well and the mornings have built up over the years.

“We managed to raise £1,188 for the children and their school in Uganda.

“There are five of us who are going to take the money and the pencils to Uganda so we know exactly where the money is going.

“So far we have helped with putting an extension on the school and installing doors and windows.”

Carol decided to help the Africa with Love charity after she sponsored a girl in Uganda and the work has spiralled from there.

She will be going to Uganda in February with some other people to give the money and the stationery to the school.

A group of knitting ladies from the Emmanuel Church on Huddersfield Road have been making a number of blankets and jumpers in bright colours which will also be going to Africa.

Carol also said: “We can’t thank all of those who support us enough and every penny and every item will benefit the children and their families.”
