Houghton Main are unbeaten in 16 games after beating Oughtibridge 3-2 to reach the semi-finals of the Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy.

Kaz Patterson scored twice for Houghton, who play in Division One of the County Senior League, while Premier Division Oughtibridge netted an own goal. Main – who are due to play another top flight side Hepworth in the semis on April 24 – have won 14 of their last 16 since September, including eight successive victories.

They are currently fourth in Division One while victory in all four of their remaining games will see them clinch one of three promotion places.

Manager Nathan Simms took over at the start of the season and lost five games in a row early on.  He said: “We had a difficult start but we were building from scratch with a completely new team. The lads have showed great character to turn it around and now we are on great form.

“Hopefully we can finish the season off with a cup final and promotion. We will need to win all of our games to go up but we have played all the top teams so I think we are capable of doing it. The Premier Division is where this club belongs, we have a great set-up and one of the best football pitches in all of Barnsley.”
