A CRICKETER nicknamed 'ton-up Houghton' because of his ability to knock out centuries has died.

Michael Houghton, 67, of Monsal Crescent, Athersley, died on January 14. He had been ill for some time with heart problems and had undergone open heart surgery.

The Barnsley League batsman played through the 1970s and 1980s. He was known for his talent in cracking out centuries and in 1982 in a Barnsley match against Leeds at Headingley scored 139 not out with 21 boundaries.

He played in sides for Worsbrough Bridge, Dodworth and Yorkshire Council.
