PLANS for a new multi-screen cinema has been revealed by the council as part of its £50m town centre regeneration scheme - pitting it against plans already approved to build a nine-screen cinema on the roof of the Alhambra Centre.

Negotiations are underway between the council and the Alhambra's owners, F and C Reit, and it is understood cinema operators have been consulted.

Council leader Sir Steve Houghton the council wants the multiplex as part of its own development and said it would be built on a proposed new 'shopping boulevard' running parallel to Cheapside, through where the semi-open market and multi-storey car park stands now.

"We are pressing ahead with getting the town centre cinema and it is a very important part of what we are doing," said Coun Houghton."It will be an anchor for the that part of the town centre and key to generating night time economy."
