PLANS to introduce cameras to taxis in Barnsley are being pushed forward by the council in an attempt to improve safety for both passengers and drivers.

Barnsley Council has been re-examining its licensing policy for cab drivers following the child sexual exploitation scandal in Rotherham where some taxi drivers were implicated.

While Rotherham Council has been tightening up its procedures, many of the measures now being adopted were already in place locally, the council’s ruling Cabinet has been told.

Members agreed at a meeting last Wednesday that a policy of installing cameras should be followed, though a report warned: “Introducing taxi cameras in Barnsley would involve a lengthy and difficult process, including the gathering of suitable evidence to justify such a move and close collaboration with the Information Commissioner’s Office to establish the rules and constraints within which any such scheme would have to operate.”
