FORTY nine people made redundant by Barnsley Council during the austerity years have been given new jobs by the authority, the Chronicle can reveal.

The figures have been released in the week that councillors have confirmed a council tax rise of almost five per cent.

Since the 2011/12 financial year, the council has been re-employing increasing numbers of people who have been previously made redundant.

That means that taxpayers have faced the cost of financing severance packages for people who have lost their jobs, to later find alternative employment with the council.

The figures were obtained through a Freedom of Information request and although Barnsley Council declined to reveal which areas of the authority those re-employed worked, on the grounds it would take too long to compile, it was able to confirm the majority of those involved were teachers.
