TEACHERS in Barnsley have been bitten, head butted, hit with furniture and spat at by pupils, according to figures obtained by the Chronicle.

More than 30 attacks on teachers in Barnsley were reported to police between 2011 and the end of 2016 and officers were called out to deal with 13 incidents of children taking knives into school during that same period.

The figures have been released by South Yorkshire Police under a Freedom of Information request.

In Barnsley there has been 31 physical assaults against teachers over the last six years. That equates to about five each year with roughly two per year resulting in injury.

Attacks included incidents of biting, head butting and school staff being dragged, pushed, pulled, or grabbed. More serious incidents of kicking, kneeing and stomping were also recorded, along with a case of spitting and strangulation.
