THE BATTLE over Barnsley’s plans to cut the long school summer holidays has been put on hold for a second time amid yet more criticism over the consultation process.
Council bosses have now decided ‘proper’ consultation is needed with teachers, with the council’s education spokesman, Coun Tim Cheetham, saying they have been given “unreliable” feedback from the NUT.
The move comes just three weeks after the council agreed it would push ahead with the controversial plans to get rid of the six week holidays and replace them in 2017/18 with four weeks four days in the summer and an extra week in October.
But now the radical overhaul will be put on the back burner again so teachers can be consulted and comes in the same week the National Union of Teachers - which represents about 1,000 teachers in the borough - announced a public meeting next week to discuss the major change.
