A MURAL has been made be teenage school children to cover up unsightly and inappropriate graffiti on a skating ramp in Darton.

The year nine pupils, from Darton College, spent two days working with graffiti artist David Cross to design the mural.

It was presented to Coun Linda Burgess and the Voice for Darton community group at the skate park on Wednesday.

Teacher Jason Gardner said the pupils collected rubbish and other objects from around the park to create backdrop for the mural, which is emblazoned with the slogan ‘Love Where You Live.’

Jason said: “We did a litter pick of the park collecting bits of cardboard and other rubbish and basically used them as a stencil, and David did the writing.

“The idea is that it has an environmental theme, but also to show support for local volunteers as well. It was a project we came up with to get rid of some of the unsightly graffiti and so people aren’t graffiti-ing the park with inappropriate things for children.

“David is a prolific artist and does work and activities with different groups around Barnsley. He’s going to spray paint a VR code on to the mural, so people can find out how it was made.”

A VR code is a code which can be scanned by smart phones and other devices, so the user can find out more information about different things. Jason said the code would lead to a documentary which had been edited by the students about the making of the mural.
