Barnsley crashed out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 home defeat to ten man Championship side Middlesbrough.

The visitors dominated the match and scored at the start and the end of the second half, either side of a red card for midfielder Adam Clayton.

Barnsley were restricted to just a few long-range efforts while only some poor finishing and resilient defending stopped Boro winning by far more goals.

Danny Wilson made two changes from the side that lost at Preston on Boxing Day with Ross Turnbull coming back from suspension to replace Adam Davies and midfielder James Bailey making way for youngster Paul Digby.

The match was delayed 15 minutes following a suspected gas leak then further after Middlesbrough's defender Rhys Williams was stretchered off after picking up an injury in the second minute.

When the game did get going, Middlesbrough dominated the first half with far superior passing and attacking play. Jelle Vossen volleyed over when clean through while Kike put a one-on-one wide and had another saved by Ross Turnbull as well as glancing a header off target.

Barnsley had defended resolutely for the first half but were breached three minutes after the break when they gifted Boro the ball just outside their box and Vossen was sent through to fire past Turnbull and make it 1-0.

Young Barnsley defender Mason Holgate almost doubled the lead when he headed against his own crossbar and then Patrick Bamford fired just wide from a tight angle.

The Reds were given hope on 78 minutes when Clayton collected his second booking for fouling ex Boro man Leroy Lita. But centre-back Daniel Ayala secured the win for the visitors when he headed in Grant Leadbitter's corner with five minutes left.
