PEOPLE in Barnsley are being reminded to test their smoke alarms.

A campaign will run until April 6 with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue encouraging people to test smoke alarms in their home and those vulnerable friends and relatives on a monthly basis, and to install smoke alarms at every level of the home.

A fire service spokesman said the majority of homes now have an alarm fitted but most people are unaware that the average alarm has a life span of ten years.

Steve Helps, head of prevention and protection said: “For most of us, there is nothing more important than keeping our loved ones safe and secure. So if your alarm is getting past its best or your top floor is missing an alarm of its own, fit new ones, test them on the first of every month and protect your loved ones at all times.”

“Press to test, monthly is best.”
