THE Civic will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the making of a Grimethorpe-inspired film this weekend.

Bafta-nominated Brassed Off followed the story of a brass band conductor struggling to maintain the morale of his musicians when the future of the local pit was thrown into doubt.

The film - starring the late Pete Postlethwaite, Tara Fitzgerald, Ewan McGregor and Stephen Tompkinson - was inspired by Grimethorpe Colliery Band’s fight for survival when the pit closed in the early 1990s.

To celebrate the anniversary, the venue will launch its new two-month exhibition tomorrow, featuring work from artists Cornelia Parker and Turner Prize-winning Jeremy Deller.
