THE LAMPROOM is hoping for one final push to hit its fundraising target this weekend.

The Westgate Theatre is raising £25,000 so it can incorporate genuine miners’ lamps, from Barnsley pits, into the auditorium as house lights.

They have launched an online crowdfunder campaign to raise £6,000 of that total.

The fund currently stands at just over £4,000.

But theatre manager Ruth Pearson says thanks to help from Barnsley Council’s crowdfunding initiative the council will match fund up to £2,000.

Ruth said: “I think we need just less than £2,000 now to get to our £6,000 goal.

“We haven’t gone 100 per cent into detail on the plans yet but we are looking at the region of £25,000 for the works.

“The Friends of the Lamproom Group have also been busy raising funds in the traditional way and will continue to do so over Christmas.”

After Christmas, an appeal will be launched for the Lamproom to source remaining ‘missing’ lamps from their collection, with the goal being to have one to represent every local pit.

They aim to have the project complete for the new season in September.

Rewards such as having a lamp dedicated in your name are available dependent on how much of a donation is given.
