WHAT a year 2015 has been for Barnsley Youth Choir - who now rank eighth-best choir on the planet according to official world rankings.

They began the year by trying to raise enough money to travel to Germany for the European Choir Games.

There was much anticipation after their successes in the 2014 World Choir Games - the choir’s first ever attempt at competitive singing which saw them return home with two gold awards and winner of one category overall.

With a lot of hard work fund-raising and a lot of generosity from Barnsley people they managed to raise a whopping £40,000. It certainly paid off.

Not only did they win both categories they entered outright, but they were asked to sing in the ‘Grand Prix of Nations Category’ which was a separate contest to find the champion of champions - and they won that as well.

It was a performance musical director Mat Wright said was ‘overwhelming’.
