Mamadou Thiam and Patrick Schmidt are ‘in the thought process’ despite being dropped from the Barnsley squad by Adam Murray.

Forward Thiam, who has made more Reds appearances than anyone else in the squad with 92, played every League One match in the promotion season.  But he has started only three Championship games this season and has not been in a matchday squad since October 2.

Murray told the Chronicle: “He’s in the thought process. But there are players ahead of him who we feel will be more effective on the pitch.  But it’s up to him to train and put himself in a position to get into the squad then into the team and keep his place, like everyone else.”

Striker Schmidt has made just four substitute appearances since arriving in the summer while he has not been in the last four squads. The 21-year-old Austrian netted for the under 23s on Monday in their 3-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Murray said: “He’s in our thought process. It’s been tough for him to come from a standard which is not where the Championship is. He has had injuries because of the  intensity. We have been getting him minutes for the under 23s. We will have to be patient because it will take him time.”

Full-backs Dani Pinillos and Jordan Williams have both been left out of all three squads under Adam Murray as has young midfielder Callum Styles. Luke Thomas and Mike Bahre, regular starters under Daniel Stendel, have been benched by Murray.
