THIEVES stole a number of church-related items from a vicar's car boot - including the 'home communion kit' he used to give his own father the last rites.

Fr Paul Cartwright, vicar at St Peter's Church, Doncaster Road, locked his car on Monday night but unfortunately a button was accidentally pushed on the remote key, popping open his boot.

The former police officer-turned vicar said the items stolen included vestments, stoles, service books and a book of prayers. Most have now been found dumped and returned.

But a home communion kit, in a grey suede case like a pencil case, given to Fr Paul as an ordination gift in 2009 has not been found.

"I use it whenever I go to visit someone who is sick or dying, and I used it when I gave my father the last rites three years ago, so it has special sentimental value for me," he said

If you find it, contact Fr Paul on 282220.
