HEARTLESS thieves robbed an elderly man of his independence when they cut though a padlock to steal his mobility scooter from his garden.

Maurice Lumley, 86, of Clear View, Grimethorpe, had securely chained up his red Pride Colt Plus scooter - £1,000 to buy new - outside his home in the garden.

But it was taken last Tuesday night and son Dean Robson believes it will be no use for anything other than scrap as the keys, charger and the all-important battery were safely locked up inside the house.

“I just cannot believe anyone could do that to an 86-year-old man,” he said.

“How low do you have to be to do that. It really has knocked him for six. He’s had an aneurism, a triple-heart bypass, has cataracts and he can’t walk very far.

“It’s totally robbed him of his independence.”

The theft has been reported to police and anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101.
