Oliver McBurnie's first Barnsley goal has been a long, long time coming.

After his summer move was cancelled due to an administrative error, Swansea City's McBurnie, 21, joined the Reds on loan at the end of the January transfer window. He marked his home debut with a great solo strike to earn a point against Sheffield Wednesday.

"It was nice to finally get out at Oakwell and get the goal," he said.

"Things were out of my hands before and it didn't happen. I played a few games at Swansea which has probably benefited me before coming here. Now it's just about getting in as many games as I can and trying to have an impact when I play. The fans were really good with me and I just hope I can keep putting performances in like that.

"They have kept in touch with how I have been doing at Swansea. It's a really good fanbase from what I've seen so far."

Part of the lure of moving to Barnsley was to work with Paul Heckingbottom but the head coach's departure to McBurnie's hometown club of Leeds cut their working relationship down to just one game. McBurnie said: "That is part and parcel of football. People do things for different reasons and, as a footballer, you have to just get on with it."

With goals at a premium for Barnsley throughout their struggles this season McBurnie's arrival is seen as a major boost. He said: "To score on my full debut in front of a massive crowd like that means it's up there (among the best he has scored). I lost my head a bit with the celebrations but it's what you dream about when you're a kid. If we did go behind in the game we wanted to get straight back at them and show the fans what we are about and get them behind us. I think the boys are better than they think they are. If we perform like that and get a bit of the rub of the green then we'll be fine."
