BARNSLEY Council made a total of 910 decisions on planning applications in the last year with 92 per cent being approved, latest official statistics show.

In all, 1,010 applications were received by the council during the 12 months to September 2018. During that period, 910 decisions were made, of which 840 were approvals 92 per cent.

This is higher than the England average of 88 per cent but the second lowest rate in South Yorkshire, with only Rotherham approving fewer applications (91 per cent). Doncaster and Sheffield both approved 95 per cent of applications.

The vast majority of planning decisions are made by council planning officers under delegated powers not by a vote of councillors on the council’s planning board. Councillors only vote on the most contentious plans or ones been submitted by the council itself.

Of the 910 decisions made in Barnsley, 94 per cent were made by planning officers in line with the England average figure, also 94 per cent.
