A VISIT from a husky to a Goldthorpe memory cafe went down a storm.

Thunder the husky visited the Memory Cafe at The Factory, Barnburgh Lane, to meet those attending.

The cafe is organised by Gareth’s Gang, made up of the friends and family of Gareth Wilmot, who was diagnosed with dementia aged just 35 and died of the disease in March.

Thunder’s owner Adrian Ashworth had a connection with Gareth and his family after they featured in his photographic exhibition Somewhere In Time at the Barnsley Civic.

Thunder is one of the Barnsley Dementia Dogs and his visit to the cafe last month was his Goldthorpe debut.

Gareth’s Gang member Andrea Calladine said: “The visit from Thunder and Adrian Ashworth was phenomenal to say the least.

“Due to popular demand we resulted in hiring the larger room downstairs in the Factory from DISC, who gave it us at an amazingly low price due to us being a good cause.

“We managed to fill the room to its capacity with visitors as well as emotions.

“We invited Havenfield Lodge care home and we were humbled by their reaction, as Havenfield is where Gareth spent his final days and apparently was loved by all staff who cared for him. This alone was an honour for us when they brought eight residents and three or four carers.”
