Toby Sibbick believes the quartet of new, young Barnsley centre-backs can learn quickly and help the club impress in the Championship.

The 20-year-old joined last week from AFC Wimbledon while the other players in his position are 21-year-olds Mads Andersen, Aapo Halme and Bambo Diaby.

Sibbick told the Chronicle: “The gaffer has brought in the centre-backs he wants to work with. We all want to pass the ball out, we are all aggressive and quick. We’re all young but we are going to learn quickly and we are at the right club to do that.

“It has been good so far at Barnsley. I am getting to know the boys a bit better. They are a good bunch of boys who have made me and the other signings welcome. It’s a friendly environment. We’re all here for a main goal which is to do well in the Championship.”

Sibbick came off the bench in a 0-0 draw for Wimbledon at Oakwell last August then watched from the stands as the Reds won 4-1 in London.

“I remember playing at Oakwell and I watched our home game against them. You could tell they are a very good team who like to pass the ball and press very high. I am learning that style every day now and think it’s well-suited for me.”

Sibbick is hoping to be the latest star centre-back for the club which developed the likes of John Stones, Alfie Mawson, Marc Roberts and the two they have sold this summer – Ethan Pinnock and Alfie Mawson.

He said: “That is one of the main reasons I have come here.  “They like to develop young players then move them on, but I don’t see why I can’t progress at this club because it’s a big club that is coming into the Championship. Hopefully we can establish ourselves at that level.”

Sibbick’s first position is centre-back but he also plays right-back, as he did in the friendly in Toulon on Tuesday.
