BARNSLEY is home to one of the world’s most famous brass bands but it’s a fierce rival from Bradford who will be performing in the town later this year.

The Black Dyke Band is coming to Barnsley possibly for the first time ever in a concert at the Civic in October.

“I’ve only been in the band six years but I’ve spoken to people who’ve been playing more than 30 years and they don’t think we’ve been to Barnsley in at least 30 years,” said baritone player Ben Wright, 28.

“It may well be the first time we’ve ever played in Barnsley.”

Black Dyke and the equally-famous Grimethorpe are fierce rivals. Both will be competing in both the British Open and the British Brass Band Championship national finals at the Albert Hall ahead of the concert in Barnsley.

“Our principal cornet Richard Marshall knows Barnsley well as he used to play principal cornet for Grimethorpe.

“And Grimethorpe’s principal cornet Roger Webster has been principal cornet at Black Dyke.

“It’s great to be playing in Barnsley as it’s a town well known for brass bands.”

Black Dyke will be at the Civic on Saturday October 20 at 7pm. For tickets call 327000 or click here.
