TOURISM bosses are trying to get a Twitter feed closed down, claiming it could jeopardise their attempts to promote the town to visitors.

The parody @visitbarnsley_ account was set up less than a month ago but has already attracted almost 2,500 followers – more than double that of the official 'Visit Barnsley' account.

But instead of singing the praises of the town's tourist attractions and beauty spots, it is posting a stream of joke pictures and sarcastic quips which could damage the town's reputation.

This week, tourism bosses urged members of the Visitor Economy Forum, which respresents all the key tourist attractions across the borough, to block the parody account from following their Twitter feeds.
