PLANNING is underway for events in the town centre to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Representatives of several organisations including the Royal British Legion and Barnsley Civic Trust have come together to organise a public event in the town centre on Saturday November 17.

This is the weekend following Remembrance Sunday - it will not interfere with any of the more formal commemorative events and will be a celebration of the centenary of the end of the Great War.

The event in the town centre will include music, dancing, a display of military vehicles, stalls and displays of wartime photographs and artefacts.

The committee behind it is applying for a grant of £1,000 from the collective ward alliances in the Central Area Council area - Central, Dodworth, Kingstone, Stairfoot and Worsbrough.

This will cover insurance, staging, publicity materials and other costs associated with the event, which will be based across several sites in town including Mandela Gardens, the Victorian Arcade and three locations within the Alhambra Centre.

It will be followed in the evening with a buffet dance at the Civic called The Boys Are Back, featuring dancing to music by the band Swingamathing.

Tickets for that event are available here.
