A £50 million markets redevelopment scheme for Barnsley town centre was given the green light this week, bringing it another step closer to fruition.

Outline permission was granted to redevelop the commercial core of the town centre on Tuesday. Access, appearance, landscaping and layout will be decided later.

The plans will provide a refurbished market area, new retail, food and drink units, a cinema, public square and library.

Jumble Lane crossing would also be closed and a new pedestrian footbridge built across the railway tracks to the recently approved CEAG car park.
