A DEMONSTRATION outside the town hall is set to take place next week over the possible redundancy of nine school dinner ladies.

Unison activists, representing the dinner ladies from Ladywood Primary, Grimethorpe, will be joined by other members of Barnsley Trades Union Council (BTUC). They will demonstrate outside the Town Hall next Thursday before the council holds its full council meeting. The demonstration will be followed by a march through town.

BTUC secretary George Arthur said: “Unions across Barnsley are impressed with the determination that has been shown by these women. Faced with some of them being sacked for Christmas they have shown great solidarity.

“I’m shocked as an ex-teacher that the school management are setting such a poor example to children in the school.

“Schools are meant to be teaching children about caring for everybody and creating a kind community.”
