Cudworth boxer Andy Townend made a successful first defence of his English title on Saturday night.

The super-featherweight, 26, started slowly on his TV debut - live on Sky Sports - but eventually showed off his devastating power with a seventh round stoppage of Lee Glover from West Bromwich.

Townend, who boxed as an amateur for the Hard and Fast club in Cudworth, was cut in the first round and looked sluggish early on.

But his power, that has seen him stop nine opponents out of his 13 wins, came into play. He decked Glover in the fourth round with a hook to the jaw.

Mexborough-trained Townend stepped up his attacks a round later and had Glover in trouble.

The stoppage came a couple of rounds later with Glover left spreadeagled following a body shot and unable to beat referee Victor Loughlin's count.
